Restore Maui hospital transition immediately – by Joseph Pluta
There are not adequate words to describe the current blockage to the Maui Memorial Medical Center transition. While some are "concerned," others are shocked and outraged.
We have expressed our urgent request to the Governor's Office and informed that recent interpretation of the injunction on the transition is not supposed to apply to adequate coverage by physicians to ensure patient safety.
How can you describe the indescribable? This intolerable situation piles on liability to the state should one life be lost here on Maui due to this indescribable travesty and misapplication of the law.
Time is of the essence. Lives are literally at stake. We do not have any other hospitals like they do on every other island in Hawaii. Maui is the only island with one hospital. Unbelievable!
Let's hope national media does not pick this up and destroy tourism on Maui!
The governor should ask the attorney general that he may take this interpretation to mean that the injunction is effectively "set aside" accordingly, and get everything back on track immediately to "ensure patient safety." Call and write the Governor's Office if you share my belief that this crisis must be stopped now and the governor's authority to protect the health and safety of the people of Hawaii permits him to restore the transition immediately. Lawyers can argue later when lives are not in imminent danger.
