We also extend our thank you to Pastor Laki Kaahumanu who did a Hawaiian prayer (pule) to kick off the business meeting.   And we applaud our Board of Directors who have accepted the responsibility to represent you and your concerns that parallel our mission and goals, as well as to educate and inform the public on issues that have not yet reached the community-at-large. 



 We thank our government representatives who were able to attend with updates and initiatives:

·         Deidre Tegarden, Governor’s Representative –Maui, Governors Office

·         Senator Roz Baker – 5th Senatorial District

·          Representative Angus McKelvey – 10th House District

·         Mayor Alan Arakawa, County of Maui

·         Elle Cochran, Council Member, County of Maui

We thank our speakers for updating us on on-going projects:

·         Pamela English – WMTA Board Member on the Lahaina Skatepark

·         Charlene Shibuya, Department of Transportation, Maui Division on 2011 projects and 2012 projects, completed and on-going.

·         Dr. Jerome Tannenbaum, Sanderling Healthcare on the West Maui hospital

 As those who were in attendance could tell, this is a meeting never to be missed! 

 Deidre Tegarden presented a personal greeting from Governor Abercrombie.  In addition to recognizing the great importance and work of WMTA, they applauded WMTA efforts and successes.

 Mayor Alan Arakawa and Council Member Elle Cochran gave many new and exciting updates as to what is planned for the future.  In addition, Mayor Arakawa and the County of Maui presented our very own Uwe Schulz a County of Maui Proclamation for his dedicated service to the West Maui community for over 40 years!

 We extend our condolences and prayers to the Gonzalez Family who recently lost a family member and came to the meeting with the paddling community to voice their concern of ocean safety in the community. This being the first opportunity to share their concerns in a large group setting, WMTA gave a spoke-person the opportunity to bring their issue to the community.  This is another reason why it is important to support the WMTA – it is many times the first opportunity for your voice to be heard, if not the only. 

 The DLNR is in need of a prodding for immediate action regarding the ocean safety deaths.  Senator Baker & Representative McKelvey ensured the community, that they are both introducing bills to protect all those who use our ocean – but it will take YOU, the community, to send your emails and show up to testify to push these bills forward.  

 Pam English gave an update on the near-completion of the skate park.  She provided pictures that were very exciting. There have been people sneaking in to skate, and she does ask that if anyone knows of any skaters to please let them know that it will be open SOON, so please do not enter until the final steps are completed.

 Charlene Shibuya gave the community great presentation with great visuals as to what project have been completed in West Maui in the past year, and what we can look forward to in 2012. 

 Dr. Jerome Tannenbaum of Sanderling Healthcare provided an update of all the great steps they are taking to bring the West Maui hospital to reality.  The community response this update was well received and appreciated.  We all look forward to the next steps.

 We also thank Paulo Faleafine Jr of the Royal Hawaiian Guard, and Liz Foote of the Kaanapali Makai Watch Program. 

 Overall, it was a great information-filled event that reached many members of the community. 

]]><![CDATA[Lahaina Town Action Committe Meeting]]>Mon, 16 Jan 2012 14:32:16 -1000http://www.westmaui.org/2/post/2012/01/lahaina-town-action-committe-meeting.html_  The Annual Meeting will be sponsored by LahainaTown Action Committee on Monday, January 30th.   The public is invited to gather at the Pioneer Inn Courtyard at 5:00pm.  Light Pupus will be offered with refreshments and a no host open bar will be available. Guest speaker will be Mayor Alan M. Arakawa.   

The LahainaTown Action Committee invites our West Side residents to come meet the LahainaTown Board members.  It is the hopes of the LahainaTown Action Committee to promote, encourage and preserve the historical, cultural, social and commercial vitality of Lahaina, the town and destination.  In addition, the LAC is the center hub for Lahaina festivals and ongoing weekend events.  The LahainaTown Action Committee would like to meet the public and would love to discuss ideas for the 2012-2013 year.  In addition, four interim board members will be running for a permanent position on the board.   

The LahainaTown Action Committee would like to take this opportunity to invite residents to   visit and enjoy light appetizers and meet and greet other Lahaina residents, Board of Economic Development and the LahainaTown Action Committee board.

WMTA Annual Meeting - January 12, 2011
The community is invited to attend the West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA) Annual Meeting on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  Join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, and share with you our goals of the upcoming year. 

The event is free, but donations are appreciated.

It will be at the Lahaina Civic Center Main Meeting Room beginning with Food Service at 5:00 PM.  There will be regular business and the Election of Board of Directors starting at 5:30 PM, followed by speakers and special presentation such as State and County officials and directors, as well as various speakers on West Maui projects as the Skate Park, By Pass, Hospital and more!  Visit www.WestMaui.org for updates and changes, as the speakers are subject to change.

5pm-8pm the evening will come to life with a festive Luʻau and Hōʻike. During our Luʻau you will feast on Hawaiian food while enjoying beautiful music. This then flows into our Hōʻike where you will witness the story of HM King Kalākaua in honor of his 175th birthday.

WEST MAUI TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION (WMTA) 2011 ANNUAL MEETING
Lahaina, Hawai`i, March 7, 2011 – The community gathered for the West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA) annual meeting held at the Lahaina Civic Center on March 3, 2011. 

Feature speakers included:  Representative Angus McKelvey updating the community on various bills and initiatives; State Department of Transportation Charlene Shibuya provided updates on West Maui road projects including Lahaina Bypass; Mayor Alan Arakawa gave an update on the hard work being done in the first two months since taking office; Jo Anne Johnson-Winer, County of Maui Transportation Director, gave a short update of her duties – including recent changes to bus routes; Elle Cochran, West Maui County Council Member also provided an update on the projects she has been working on. 

Presentations included Howard Hanzawa of Kaanapali Land Management Corp. providing updates on Puukolii Village and the West Maui hospital; Pamela English provided updates on Pulelehua, and West Maui Skate park. 

Complimentary and “ono-delicious” dinner plate service for attendees were provided by the generosity of Maui Land & Pineapple Co., Inc.  (Honolua Stores Chow Fun, Kalua pork and cabbage and rice) Java Jazz (coffee), as well as water and sodas provided by Kaanapali Land Management Corp.  


(R)Mayor Alan Arakawa, featured speaker, updated the community on all the great things happening in the past two months. (L) Executive Assistant in the Mayors Office (Former WMTA Executive Director) Ezekiela Kalua and WMTA Board President Donald Lehman.

ABOUT WEST MAUI TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION - The West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA) is a non-profit 501 (c) (4) organization founded in 1974 to provide an organized voice of support for public and private improvements which have potential benefit for the West Maui community from Lahaina to Kapalua.  WMTA was founded to assure that West Maui would receive its fair share of tax-funded improvements by state and county governments. WMTA has been at work on these improvements for over 30 years.

WMTA has represented West Maui on a wide range of issues for over 35 years.  Our members, and the West Maui community, have directed our attention to three primary areas: traffic problems, health care (especially emergency care), and affordable housing.  Speakers at the WMTA addressed these issues.
